According to government records, over 200,000 Long Islanders
paid too much in property taxes last year.
Here's some who didn't -- and why.
- A Smithtown homeowner had a feeling his property was over-assessed. He turned to Tax Reduction Services to file a grievance on his behalf. He received a $2800 tax reduction.
-
A woman in Great Neck, who had no idea she was over-assessed, realized a $1740 tax reduction.
- A Brookhaven resident turned to Tax Reduction Services after her attorney was unable to help. She reaped an $897 savings on her taxes.
- In Riverhead, a local resident was sent home by the assessor's office, who said he was wasting his time. TRS was able to get him a $1400 reduction.
- A property owner in Huntington filed a grievance because he thought his taxes were too high. He failed to get a reduction. However, he turned to Tax Reduction Services for the appeal -- and realized a $1250 savings.
- An East Hampton homeowner found out that his assessment was much higher than his neighbors' who had similar homes. He turned to TRS and saved $8500 in taxes.
- In Nassau County, a homeowner saved $28,000 in taxes over a three year period when TRS presented evidence that the current fair market value of his Mill Neck home was substantially lower than the value the town placed on his home.
